Why Diets Don't Work for Binge Eating (And What Actually Does)
If you've tried to stop binge eating by dieting harder, eating cleaner, or finally finding the right plan, and it hasn't worked, you are not failing. You're running into a well documented problem, restriction is one of the biggest drivers of binge eating there is.
The Diet-Binge Cycle
This isn't a new theory. In the 1940s, a famous study called the Minnesota Starvation Experiment took healthy men and reduced their food intake to roughly half of what they'd been eating. Within weeks, participants who had no prior history of disordered eating became preoccupied with food, some binged when given access to it again, and many described a loss of control they'd never experienced before.
This is the dieting paradox in action. Restriction, whether it's a formal diet or just quietly "being good" during the day, primes the body and brain for exactly the loss of control that shows up later as a binge. The binge isn't a separate problem from the diet, it's the other half of the same cycle.
Why the Next Diet Won't Be Different
It's tempting to believe that the right plan, the right macros, the right amount of discipline will finally be the exception. But every diet operates on some version of restriction, whether it's calories, food groups, or timing, and restriction is the mechanism that fuels bingeing in the first place.
This is why so many people find themselves losing weight temporarily, then regaining it along with new binge episodes, over and over. It's not just you, it's a predictable result of the approach itself.
What Actually Breaks the Cycle
Real change comes from stepping outside the restrict-binge cycle entirely, rather than trying to manage it from inside. That means rebuilding a foundation of consistent, adequate eating, working through the beliefs that food has to be earned or controlled, and addressing the emotional patterns that often run underneath the behavior.
This is exactly the work we do inside Reclaiming Wellness, my step-by-step path to ending binge eating without dieting. It's not another meal plan. It's the process of untangling the cycle at its root, alongside other people doing the same work.
If you've spent years feeling like you were the one exception every plan couldn't fix, I want you to consider a different possibility, the plans were the problem, not you. There is a way out of this cycle that doesn't involve another diet, and you don't have to find it alone.
